The Red Violin
Ahh yes, The Red Violin. This movie follows the journey of the red violin, the last violin created by legendary luthier Nicolo Bussotti, which spans over the course of centuries. Now what makes this movie so disturbing is that Nicolo, in grief over the death of his wife and child during labour, adds her blood to the violin's varnish, giving it a distinctive red colour.
Creepy.
The gypsies pop up into this movie somewhere in the middle, after gypsy grave robbers steal it from the grave of the previous owner. They hang onto the violin for a century, being passed down through the generations, until a gypsy girl loses it to a man she was presumably sleeping with. It's complicated.

The gypsies here are clearly great musicians, with this unique melody practically guaranteed to get stuck in your head worse than a Justin Bieber song. This contributes to the idea that gypsies were travelling entertainers, which isn't exactly bad, but nonetheless a stereotype.
But of course, when you think about how they gypsies stole the violin from the grave of a dead man, you aren't exactly given the most positive impression of them either.
